How to tell if your stickhandling is actually getting faster

You can feel when your hands are on. You can't feel a 4% improvement over six weeks — and 4% over six weeks is what real progress actually looks like.

Stickhandling is one of the hardest skills to verify, because the only feedback you get is a feeling, and that feeling is contaminated by things that have nothing to do with your hands: how warm you are, how much you slept, whether the surface is fast or slow, and how many reps you'd already done before the good one.

Here's a test you can actually repeat, the math to compare one month to another, and the specific mistakes that hide progress from you.

Why "it feels faster" is unreliable

Three things go wrong when feel is your only measurement:

  • You get better at the drill, not the skill. Run the same pattern 200 times and you'll get faster at that pattern within a session. Come back four days later and a chunk of that is gone. Session-internal improvement feels like progress and mostly isn't — it's warm-up plus pattern familiarity.
  • You remember your best rep, not your average. Everybody's memory of last month is their best touch from last month. You're comparing today's average to last month's peak, which makes flat periods feel like decline and real gains feel like nothing.
  • Speed without control isn't a gain. Hands get "faster" the moment you stop caring about losing the puck. If you only measure speed, you'll reward sloppiness and call it improvement.

A test you can repeat: 30 seconds, three sets

The point of a protocol is that you hold everything else steady, so the only thing that can change the number is your hands.

The protocol

  1. Fix the surface and the puck. Same shooting pad or same floor, same puck or ball every time. A slick pad and a rough garage floor are different tests — you can't compare them, ever.
  2. Fix the warm-up. Same routine, same length, every time. Cold hands and warm hands differ by more than a month of training does.
  3. Pick one pattern and never change it. Wide dangles, toe drags, figure-8s — doesn't matter which, as long as it's identical each test. Changing the pattern resets your entire history.
  4. 30 seconds, count touches. Every controlled contact counts. Stop the clock at 30.
  5. Count lost pucks separately. A touch where you lose control isn't a touch. Record it in its own column.
  6. Three sets, 60 seconds rest. Record all three. Not the best one — all three.
  7. Same rough time of day. Evening hands and 7am hands aren't the same hands.

Testing weekly is plenty. Daily testing tells you about your sleep, not your stickhandling.

The math that makes progress visible

Two numbers per session, and one of them is the one nobody tracks:

touches per second = total touches ÷ 30 control rate = touches ÷ (touches + lost pucks)

Take the average of your three sets, not the best. The average is the honest number: your best set is partly luck, and luck doesn't repeat on a schedule.

Then compare four-week blocks, not sessions. Average everything from weeks 1–4 and compare it to weeks 5–8. Session-to-session comparison is almost pure noise; month-to-month is signal.

How much change is actually real

This is the part that separates useful tracking from self-deception, and it's simpler than it sounds. Your three sets already tell you how much random variation you have.

Say a session gives you 88, 82, and 91 touches. That's a spread of 9 touches around a mean of 87 — roughly ±10%. That spread is your noise floor. It means a 5% "improvement" next week is meaningless: it's smaller than the amount your own number bounces around inside a single session.

The rule

A change only counts as real when it's bigger than your own set-to-set spread. Wide spread means you need a bigger change before you can believe it — or you need to tighten the protocol so the spread shrinks.

Most people's stickhandling spread is 5–12%. So look for 10%+ across a month before you call it progress. That sounds slow. It is slow. It's also what real skill acquisition looks like, and knowing that is what stops you from quitting a program that's working.

Five mistakes that hide real progress

  1. Changing the drill. The most common one. You get bored, you switch patterns, and you throw away every comparison you'd built. Keep one pattern as your permanent test and let the rest of your practice be as varied as you like.
  2. Only logging good sessions. If you skip recording bad days, your chart shows your ceiling rising while your average does nothing. Log everything or the data lies in your favour.
  3. Testing at different points in the session. Test fresh, always before your main work. A test after 40 minutes of practice measures your conditioning.
  4. Tracking speed alone. Without the control rate you can't tell improvement from a lowered standard.
  5. Comparing yourself to clips. The stickhandling videos you're watching are someone's best rep out of forty, on their best surface. You're comparing your average to their highlight.

Notice weeks 5–8. If you'd been judging by feel, that block feels like a plateau and it's where most people change everything. It was working the whole time — the change was just smaller than the measurement error. That single misread is responsible for an enormous amount of abandoned training.
